SACAS to Host ICA Moon Festival on 25 September 2010
Chatter-Chicks Event - Vietnamese Style! The SACAS Adoptive Mothers group "Chatter-Chicks" met at a Vietnamese restaurant in May. From all reports it was a great night out. The food was very cheap but the quality excellent. As one expects from a Vietnamese joint in Adelaide's western suburbs. This network is a really valuable one for SACAS mothers to discuss their children and parenting techniques. It is also a great way for them to have some "ME TIME" away from the pressures of work and running a home. Events are held regularly and all adoptive mothers in SACAS are welcome to attend.
22 May 2010 - Inter-Country Adoption Family Day 2010 Families Week was celebrated with a collaborative event involving most of the ICA Support Groups. SACAS provided several crafts including making a chopstick kite and painting a Beijing opera mask. Kara Holder and Wendy Stewart did some great face painting and the children were also delighted to receive some Indian henna tattoos English born Nigel Holden (SACAS President and Grand Poo Bah of The Curry Club) served up some curries and rice from India, Sri Lanka and Thailand all whilst dressed in traditional Chinese attire. Now that is truly multi-cultural! Neale Winter also cooked up a mean Indian Mullagatawny curry soup. Proceeds were donated to assist in funding this community event. The event was also registered the event with National Families Week – an initiative of the Department of Families and Communities. They kindly supplied balloons, temporary tattoos and other promotional material. It was also great to have the profile of intercountry adoption and our unique families lifted by including our event on their national website. The inter-country adoption community in South Australia is a small one and so it is really important that we take these opportunities to come together. SACAS has always valued collaboration between country specific groups and it is something that the new SACAS Board remains committed to. Our children can only benefit from the interaction it creates.
11 April 2010 - Qing Ming Kite Festival Picnic Well the weather forecast threatened rain but it turned out to be a fine if somewhat cold and windy day. Perfect for flying kites! There were a number of kites on display during the day, including lots of lady-bugs. One ladybug got so excited that she decided to “flyaway home” and was last seen heading towards the airport! The beachside park and playground was an ideal location, although a little exposed for our planned craft activities. If you would like to do some of this craft and learn more about kites please check out the Chinese Wisdom pages. Thanks to all who braved the elements for generating and sharing in the fun.
14 February 2010 - Chinese New Year Picnic The 2010 Chinese New Year Picnic was a great family event to start the Year of the Tiger with a roar. There was a great playgroup as well as face painting and a craft tent for the children. Our surprise guest was flown in direct from China and Poo-Poo the Panda had a great time meeting the children. Although he did report that it was a little hot in Adelaide and he wished he had a cold rock to lie on like his cousins Wang-Wang and Funi in the Adelaide Zoo. If you missed this fantastic family event don't worry - there are plenty more panned for 2010 starting with a Kite Festival in April. Stay tuned for more details soon!
